Red lead

Definition and stakes

George Terry,  Pigments, Paint and Painting: A practical book for practical men

“ If red lead is thus proved to be the best pigment for preserving iron and steel structures, what is the proper method for applying it? We have seen above that the value of red lead depends upon its forming certain combinations with the oil, and actually setting very much the same as plaster of Paris or cement sets when mixed with water. ”

George D. Armstrong,  Cyclopedia of Painting (1908)

“ Red lead is produced by raising massicot, which is the commercial name for oxide of lead, to a high temperature, short of fusion, during which it absorbs oxygen from the air and is converted into red lead or minium, also an oxide of lead. The color is lasting, and is unaffected by light when it is pure and used alone, but any preparation containing lead or acids mixed with it deprives it of color, and impure air makes it black. ”
