Social Statics

Definition and stakes

Emory S. Bogardus,  A history of social thought (1922)

“ Social statics is the study of the laws of action and reaction of the different parts of the social order, aside for the time being from the general social movements which are modifying them.XIII-15 Social dynamics considers the laws of progress. Social statics inquires into the laws of co-existence of social phenomena;221 social dynamics examines the laws of social succession. Sociology is the study of social organization and of social progress.
Society is in a state of anarchy. Individuals with the best of purposes are continually weakening the efforts of each other.

Portrait of Albion Woodbury Small Albion Woodbury Small,  The American Journal of Sociology… (1895)

“ This is social statics, or we may study it in its onward movement, and the laws of that movement. From this point of view we perceive that the equilibrium is never perfect; peace, contentment and rest is never complete, nor ought to be; for society is ever struggling to reach a higher plane with wider outlook. The equilibrium is continually disturbed a little in order to be readjusted on a higher plane, with more complex interrelation of all its parts. This is social dynamics, social development, social progress. It is social evolution. ”

Portrait of Randolph Silliman Bourne Randolph Silliman Bourne,  Untimely papers (1919)

“ By the time we find ourselves here we are caught in a network of customs and attitudes, the major directions of our desires and interests have been stamped on our minds, and by the time we have emerged from tutelage and reached the years of discretion when we might conceivably throw our influence to the reshaping of social institutions, most of us have been so molded into the society [190] and class we live in that we are scarcely aware of any distinction between ourselves as judging, desiring individuals and our social environment. ”
