The Orphan

Definition and stakes

Rebekah Smith,  Poems: With a Sketch of the Life and Experience of Annie R. Smith

“ The turmoil, care, and strife,
The tears, the sighs, that may beset
The orphan’s path in life.
Poor little orphan child!
’Tis bitter hard to roam
In this cold, dark, unfeeling world,
Both friendless and alone,
Where friendship ends in selfish aims,
Lips smile but to deceive,
Unkindness mars the spirit’s peace,
And leaves the heart to grieve.
Poor little orphan child!
For thee is pained my heart;
Should sickness pale thy rosy cheek,
And light and hope depart,—
Oh, who would then be near to bathe
The weary, aching head,
And twine around thee, arms of love,
And joy and gladness shed.

Portrait of Florence Randal Livesay Florence Randal Livesay,  Songs of Ukraina, with Ruthenian poems (1916)

“ SONG OF THE ORPHAN I will go into the field and talk to the dew; and together with the dew I will bemoan our unlucky fate.
I will climb a hill and fall into thought: I was left an orphan; I have no friends.
In my tiny garden grows a lovely lily.... And what is that to me, if I am still young, if I am still an orphan?
As the soaking hemp rots in the water, so lives an orphan in this world.
