Charkha

Definition and stakes

Mohandas K. Gandhi,  The Poet and the Charkha (1925)

“ The Poet thinks that the Charkha is calculated to bring about a deathlike sameness in the nation and thus imagining he would shim it if he could. The truth is that the Charkha is intended to realise the essential and living oneness of interest among India’s myriads. Behind the magnificent and kaleidoscopic variety, one discovers in nature a unity of purpose, design and form which is equally unmistakable. No two men are absolutely alike, not even twins, and yet there is much that is indispensable common to all mankind. And behind the commonness of form there is the same life pervading all. ”

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi,  The Wheel of Fortune (1922)

“ Mr. Gandhi during his visit to Assam and Eastern Bengal has observed, that the type of charkha in use in those parts is deficient in many ways. The same is perhaps the case in other provinces. As we believe that the charkha in the Satyagrahashram is a model of its kind, we give below a diagram with measurements of all its parts with an explanation of their relative functions. ”

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi,  The Pilgrims' March (1921)

“ The sacrifice and bravery which this mother has shown is inexpressible. But it is a matter of deepest regret that the people have not even discarded foreign clothes. The Ali Brothers are so brave that even the Government is having so many regiments. When such brave sons and brave mothers are in our midst why should we be afraid? The order of our leaders about Charkha is not a trifling thing. This Charka means Hindi-ki-Jai. I appeal to you that for the sake of honoring this brave mother's pledge yourselves to wear Khaddar only—even if only to honor this brave mother. ”
