Double refraction

Definition and stakes

Augustin Jean Fresnel,  Letter to Arago on biaxial birefringence

“ Yesterday I finally ascertained that the speed was non-uniform for the ordinary ray in crystals of two axes, as my theoretical ideas on double refraction told me in advance and in such a necessary manner that, if the result of the experiment had not been in conformity with this consequence, I would have been obliged to reject entirely my hypotheses on double refraction ”

“ With the water the delicacy of the test was somewhat less.
When it is attempted to replace the liquid by solid matter, the difficulties of experiment are greatly increased. The best results that I have been able to obtain were with built up thicknesses of plate-glass. A sufficient thickness in one piece is liable to exhibit too much double refraction from the effect of internal strains.

Dewitt Bristol Brace,  On Double Refraction in Matter moving through the Aether (1904)

“ The sensitive strip 9 was then thrown in and rotated to extinction, and then turned through 45° so as to bring its principal axes at 45° to the principal plane of the analyser. 10 was then placed in position and turned until the field on each side was of the same intensity as that of the sensitive strip. The eye thus saw the field of view illuminated uniformly with green light in the neighbourhood of this strip. The slightest trace of double refraction in the direction desired would at once make itself evident in the relative increase or diminution of the light from the strip. ”
