Electromagnetic interference

Definition and stakes

by the United States government,  Chapters (2002)

“ Omega XX signals propagate in the earth-ionosphere wave guide. This waveguide can support many different electromagnetic field configurations, each of which can be regarded as an identifiable signal component or mode having the same signal frequency, but with slightly different phase velocity. Modal interference is a special form of signal interference wherein two or more waveguide modes interfere with each other and irregularities appear in the phase pattern. ”

“ The confusion on Tyrone's face was clear. "Ok, it's actually pretty simple. You know what interference sounds like on the radio or looks like on a TV?"
"Sure. My cell phone snaps, crackles and pops all of the time."
"Exactly. Noise is simply electromagnetic energy that interferes with the signal. Right?" Scott waited for Tyrone to respond that he understood so far.
"Good. Imagine a magnetic pulse so strong that it not only interferes with the signal, but overloads the electronics them- selves. Remember that electricity and magnetism are the same force taking different forms."

“ In almost the same way that a large truck can carry a bigger load than a small one, the greater number of cycles per second in a high frequency wave permits it to carry more information than a low frequency wave.
However, high frequencies must be generated in different ways than low frequency waves are; they require special equipment to handle them. Radio waves are transmitted by causing masses of free electrons to oscillate or swing back and forth in the transmitting antenna. (Any time electrons are made to change their speed or direction they radiate electromagnetic energy.)
