Phenolphthalein

Definition and stakes

1911 Encyclopædia Britannica (1911)

“ The phthaleins on reduction yield phthalines, which are derivatives of triphenylmethane carboxylic acid, these reduction products are colourless and may be regarded as the leuco-compounds of the phthaleins, thus phenolphthalein itself gives phenolphthalein (formula IV.) . Dehydrating agents usually convert the phenolphthalein’s into anthraquinone derivatives.
Phenolphthalein is obtained when phenol and phthalic anhydride are heated with concentrated sulphuric acid.

“ Take the case of a weakly acid indicator such as phenolphthalein. The presence of an acid depresses the very slight dissociation of the indicator, and the colour of the solution is that of the non-dissociated molecule. The addition of an alkali, if it be strong, brings about the formation of a salt of phenolphthalein, which is readily ionized, and so reveals the intense red coloration of the anion; a weak base, however, fails to give free ions. An acid indicator of medium strength is methyl orange. ”

“ It was observed, however, that the acids contained in the puer diffused through the membrane; this was shown by the addition of a few drops of phenolphthalein to the lime solution, when the pink colour disappeared after a short time in the neighbourhood of the skin. These phenomena are due to osmosis. It is the fundamental property of all animal membranes, to allow some substances to pass through them more easily than others. ”
