Scourging

Definition and stakes

Franz Hunolt,  Hunolt Sermons/Volume 12 (1895)

“ Is that the sin that deserved such a long and cruel penance? Was that the fault that had to be atoned for by such fasting, watching, scourging, and shedding your own blood? Oh, if so, wo to me! wo to all poor sinners! What ought I not to do, then, to atone for my many and grievous sins! Ah, quickly, Bernard, give me thy garb of penance, thy iron girdle, the rods and scourges with which thou didst arm thy hands. All the torments of the martyrs are not enough to atone for my sins if thy faults had to be punished so severely. And hadst thou not in thy youth done penance enough for them? ”

Portrait of John Henry Newman John Henry Newman,  Tracts for the Times (1834)

“ And after the scourging, after the wild beasts, after the scorching, at last she was placed in a basket, and thrown to a bull; and died, after having been much tossed about by the animal, having no feeling of her sufferings, through her hope and hold of those things which she believed, and her converse with Christ; even the heathen themselves confessing, that no woman ever among them bore such and so numerous tortures. ”

Portrait of Philip Schaff Philip Schaff,  Ante-Nicene Fathers Vol. VIII, Memoirs of Edessa And Other Ancient Syriac Documents… (1885)

“ Lo! tortures on thy body are set like gems of beryl,
And the sword on thy neck like a chain of choice gold.
Thy blood upon thy form is a robe of glory full of beauty,
And the scourging of thy back a vesture with which the sun may not compare.
Radiant thou art and comely by virtue of these thy sufferings, so abounding;
And resplendent are thy beauties, because of the pains which are so severe upon thee.
Shamuna, our riches, richer art thou than the rich:
For lo! the rich stand at thy door, that thou mayest relieve them.
