“ However, in the movies one is spared the color of such a room; one may see that the wallpaper is of hideous design, but one cannot see its ghastly scrambled browns and greens and purples. As I glanced at the various furnishings it seemed to me that each was uglier than the last, and when finally my eye fell upon an automatic piano in a sort of combination of dark oak and art nouveau, with a stained glass front and a nickel in the slot attachment, my dream of a setting for sumptuous and esthetic sin was dead. ”

“ A striped wallpaper, printed in brilliant red, might cause wonderment in the eyes of a novice as to how it could possibly be used successfully in an ordinary room. The excessive brilliancy might at first sight appear to be certain to produce an effect too glaring to make a comfortable living-room. Yet such a paper used in a room very soberly furnished say, with old dark oak, ebony or black walnut, would look very handsome, or in a more modern room the doors, skirting, in fact the whole of the woodwork, might be finished in white enamel, and the effect would also be very good. ”

“ Pamela observed that the wallpaper was an all-over floral design in various shades of green and raised gold roses; the gloomy, old-fashioned fireplace, with its marble mantelpiece, on which were arranged a score of old china ornaments and photo frames, and a massive marble clock, was the chief feature of the wall opposite the wardrobe. The window-curtains, the duchess set on the dressing-table, and the coverlet on the bed were the only touches of white to relieve the general sombreness that prevailed. ”
