William S. Furneaux,  The Sea Shore

“ The digestive system of a brachiopod includes an œsophagus that leads into a simply formed stomach round which is a large digestive gland. The heart has only one cavity, but the animal is provided with two smaller and separate organs that assist in the propulsion of the blood, which circulates through numerous blood spaces in the bristly mantle.
About two thousand fossil species of brachiopods are known, extending over a vast range of time; and the living species, numbering less than a hundred, are found from shallow water to the greatest habitable depths.

“ According to them, braxy is an acute, or even exceedingly acute, infectious disorder, which begins as a hæmorrhagic inflammation of the mucous membrane of the abomasum, is accompanied by excessive development of gas in the digestive canal, especially in the stomachs, and proves fatal in some cases by a kind of general infection, in others by a specific intoxication, or by dyspnœa due to tympanites.
Braxy commits its chief ravages during the winter months: appearing first in autumn, the cases increase as winter approaches, to diminish again in spring; in summer they are exceedingly rare.

“ The anterior segment broadens and becomes umbrella-shaped; it has a powerful row of cilia round the rim and smaller cilia on the general surface. By the aid of these cilia the larva swims actively, but owing to its minute size it covers very little distance, and this probably accounts for the fact that where brachiopods occur there are, as a rule, a good many in one spot. The head bears four eye-spots, and it is continually testing the ground (fig. 29, A, C) . The second segment grows downwards like a skirt surrounding the third segment, which is destined to form the stalk. ”
