Pancreas

Definition and stakes

James Law,  Text book of veterinary medicine… (1902)

“ Diseases of the pancreas are even more obscure than those of the liver. Situated on the course of the duodenum, beneath the lumbar vertebræ and their right transverse processes, and separated from the lateral walls and floor of the abdomen by the great mass of the intestines, it is not open to manipulation or satisfactory percussion, and its secretions being used up in the function of digestion, so that they cannot be perceived and tested externally like the secretions of the kidneys. ”

Joseph Payne and Clifford Allbutt,  1911 Encyclopædia Britannica (1911)

“ Nor must we forget the unfolding of a new chapter of disease, in the nosology of the pancreas. In diabetes this organ seems to play a part which is not yet precisely determined; and one fell disease at least has been traced to a violent access of inflammation of this organ, caused perhaps by entry of foreign matters into its duct. The part of the pancreas in digestion also is better understood. ”

Russell M. Wilder,  Diabetes: Its Cause and Its Treatment With Insulin (1925)

“ No inflammation has occurred in the pancreas of these patients, so far as any good evidence shows; they are young and therefore not afflicted with arterial disease, and they have never been overweight and have not overeaten. How can we explain the diabetes of these children and young persons, and how can we explain why some fat persons and not all escape diabetes, and why some patients with very little disease of their pancreas have diabetes and others with very extensive destruction of the pancreas do not have it? ”
