Parabolic reflector

Portrait of Jabez Hogg Jabez Hogg,  The Microscope. Its History, Construction…

“ Wenham’s Parabolic Reflector.—This will be better understood by reference to Fig. 145, which represents it in section A B C, and shows that the rays of light r r′ r′′, entering perpendicularly at its surface C, and then reflected by its parabolic surface A B to a focus at F, can form no part of the largest pencil of light admitted by the object-glass and represented by G F H; but an object placed at F will interrupt the rays and be strongly illuminated. A stop at S prevents any light from passing through direct from the mirror. ”

Portrait of Joseph John Thomson Joseph John Thomson,  Rays of Positive Electricity and Their Application to Chemical Analyses… (1913)

“ As one parabola after another was passed, positive electricity would come abruptly through the slit, and the amount of the charge would be a measure of the number of particles passing through the slit. If instead of moving the parabolic slit we keep the slit fixed and gradually increase the magnetic field used to deflect the particles, we shall in this way drive one parabola after another on to the slit, beginning with the parabola due to the hydrogen atom and ending with that due to the mercury one, and the charges passing the slits will be proportional to the number of particles. ”

Portrait of Jagadish Chandra Bose Jagadish Chandra Bose,  On a Complete Apparatus for the Study of the Properties of Electric Waves (1897)

“ Opacity due to Multiple Refraction and Reflexion.—An experiment analogous to the opacity of powdered glass to light is shown by filling a long trough with irregular-shaped pieces of pitch, and interposing it between the radiator and the receiver. The electric ray is unable to pass through the heterogeneous media, owing to the multiplicity of refractions and reflexions, and the receiver remains unaffected. But on restoring partial homogeneity by pouring in kerosene, which has about the same refractive index as pitch, the radiation is easily transmitted. ”
