Adamson

“ Adamson lived for 396 years. Many times he returned to visit his father and mother. Every seven years he and Ratta journeyed south to the second garden, and meanwhile the midwayers kept him informed regarding the welfare of his people. During Adamson's life they did great service in upbuilding a new and independent world center for truth and righteousness. ”

“ Adamson says I can trust him. He says I can trust you. But I don't trust anybody. I know that someday soon I'm going to get a bullet in the head from one of you. All I'm hoping is that some of you hate Boggs enough to get him first."
"Why did you come to Serrengia in the first place?"
"To get away. Why did anyone come? You don't give up everything you've got in order to go to some strange world and spend the rest of your life unless you've got a reason. Unless you hate what you've got so much you're willing to try anything else. ”

“ Inns. "Rather young, ain't you? I've never had a local what-d'you-call-it before, but anyone from Adamson's sure to be all right. Been expecting you all day. Come in."
Adamson, the agent, good fellow that he was, never left me long unemployed, so here I was at Hestford—Hestford on the Wash, about the last place that was created, I should say. As I cycled the couple of miles from the station, leaving my traps to follow, I wondered what on earth could have induced any man to settle in such an out-of-the-way corner. ”

“ Adamson, “was the train of argument, as far as applicable to the then-existing condition of society among us, which was strenuously urged, and assiduously circulated by the association against duels which I have alluded to. The novelty of the arguments contributed, along with their intrinsic force, and the high character of those who urged them, to excite a general and serious attention ”

“ What we’ve heard about her makes me more than ever averse to trusting her children. Mercenary instincts, cupidity, craft, repeat themselves as the features do.”
When he had gone, Adamson threw himself again into his chair, but this time not to read. With his hand once more pawing at his hair, his mind ranged back over the conversation, repudiating the lawyer’s suspicions. He told himself that they had no foundation, were fantastic and preposterous, that the Harmon children were as innocent of any intention to lay a covetous hand on Blatch’s millions as he was himself. ”

“ Adamson took a deep inhalation, blew out a long thread of smoke, and said:
“I certainly have, Mr. Blatch. She seems to me a very unusual person.”
He would like to have said more, to have broken out into praise of her, but it was too soon. He did not know what she felt, did not want to declare himself as a suitor for Mary Harmon till he was surer of his ground. Through the cigarette smoke, he looked at Blatch and saw him sipping his coffee, over the cup’s rim his somber, animal eyes fixed on space. ”

“ Adamson’s color deepened. There was a suppressed urgence in his voice:
“Of course no one could. But a girl like that, of that character, doesn’t see such things. She doesn’t like Gaynes—she’s hinted it more than once—but she couldn’t guess what he really is because she’s too fine. Women of her kind don’t suspect—not because they’re stupid, but because there’s too much goodness in them to see evil.”
“Yes, yes,” the other nodded, staring at the table, as if pondering the young man’s words. “No doubt that’s the case—too highminded to understand such a person as our friend the doctor. ”

“ If not from Mary, it was from Hinterland, addressed in the writing of old Tom. Turning the gas higher, he stood under its light, opened the envelope, and read as follows:
Dear Mr. Adamson: I take the liberty of writing to you, being worried and not rightly sure of what I ought to do, hoping that you might give me some advice. It’s this: I don’t think Mr. Blatch is well. He's uncommon ugly in the temper and unreasonable—not the way he always is, but fierce-like—and he doesn’t sleep. There’s nights that his light’s lit till morning. ”

“ It was in her glance, kindled to a hurt partisanship, in her comments, which revealed a first disapproval of Blatch.
Adamson found himself in the unexpected position of defending his chief. It was only another evidence of the old man’s thought for other people, his invariable desire to help them on. She wouldn’t have it, gave forth murmurous disagreements—it was too drastic; he could have waited till the autumn; no one had a right to turn off a trusted employee without warning. ”

“ Adamson’s glance showed a startled question.
“But you can’t call him insane?”
“Not at all, not at all,” said the other with testy repudiation. “I never thought, much less said, such a thing. Blatch isn’t insane, but he doesn’t walk the chalk line between sanity and insanity as evenly as you or I do. He wobbles a bit. Numberless people do. I could make a good collection from my own clients. And this being the case, Adamson, it’s up to us to be careful of the influences he’s liable to fall under and guard him against bad ones.”
“I understand that perfectly, Mr. Denby. ”

“ I may take a run over to Paris for a day or two while Adamson is finding someone to buy the practice. If you want to know anything just write to me, 'care of Adamson,' but I don't expect I shall be far away."
As he remarked, he certainly did not seem to be overworked. From the time I arrived in the late afternoon until we went to bed about eleven, no patients put in an appearance. Like the rest of the house, my bedroom was furnished with a Spartan simplicity which I put down to Inns's pronounced nautical tastes. ”

“ Adamson mentions that he had written a book against his opponents under the title of ‘Psillus,’ and in the dedication of the ‘Catechism’ (1572) he mentions that he was engaged on a treatise, ‘De Politia Mosaica.’ Wilson, in the biographical sketch appended to the ‘De Sacro Pastoris Munere,’ gives the titles of several works of Adamson's, ‘quæ fere omnia, temporis injuria et malevolorum hominum odiis atque invidia huc illuc disjecta, in varias sunt manus discerpta,’ p. 21. They include Latin versions of Ecclesiastes, Daniel, and the Minor Prophets ”

“ Falling on the food, he motioned Tom to a chair opposite, and under the glow of the hanging lamp, they set to work constructing the fable which would explain his presence and enable the Harmons to leave without exciting Blatch’s suspicions. On one point Adamson was decided—he would go to the fort to-morrow morning and see that all was well. They could return with him then or stay out the week-end if they wanted, but on Monday, when the visit was over, he would take them back to New York.
To find a story taxed the inventive powers of the conspirators ”

“ Adamson was surprised. It was not Blatch’s custom to call attention to his perverse actions. The chance was propitious, and the young man answered:
“I certainly was, after what I told you.”
“If you hadn’t told me, I probably wouldn’t have asked him. But forewarned is forearmed. Knowing what I do, there need be no apprehensions about Doctor Gaynes. And why should there be any? Possibly a touch of free, open-air life, a closer contact with nature, may have a beneficial effect upon him. He looks too city-bred. Health and morals have an intimate connection.” ”

“ A surface of European polish overlaid what seemed a childishly light and thoughtless disposition, all the more noteworthy as the Harmons had no money, no relatives, and no friends. What added to his discomfort was that the boy’s close companion was a young doctor, Melville Gaynes, whom Adamson instinctively disliked and distrusted. At a former conference, he had agreed to have an investigation made of Frank’s brief career in America and the doctor’s antecedents, and if anything discreditable should turn up, to acquaint Blatch. ”

“ Jean Adamson deponed, that when her gudman sailed with David Robertson, the said David having sent him home with a ship to come for Scotland, there was a long time that there was no word of that ship; so that David Robertson coming home, and the other ship not come, nor no word from her, he said he would never see her. The said Alison Dick came in to her, (she with her bairns being weeping) , and said, What ails ye Jean to weep? She answered, We have all good cause to weep for my husband, whom we will never see more. ”

“ Each man’s anxiety had risen from his affection for Blatch, but each saw the Harmon children menacing his peace from a different angle. The lawyer envisaged the calamity of an elderly man, notoriously eccentric, falling a prey to a group of youthful schemers. The secretary saw the same man shaken from a cushioned routine and exposed to novel and agitating influences which might react upon him to his own detriment. While he combated Denby’s idea, Adamson was not entirely easy in his mind about one of the Harmon children ”

“ The loan of it is not asked for any more! every body corporate now has a mace of its own!
The Buchanan skull is still held by the college. That eminent scholar died on the 28th September 1582, and was buried in the Greyfriars Churchyard. John Adamson, Principal of the University between 1623 and 1651, got the skull by bribing the sexton, and bequeathed it to the college. The story rather revolts the taste of to-day, but grim old Scotland had a strange hankering after those elements of mortality. ”

“ In London, where he sought refuge, he continued his adhesion to romanticism by publishing Adozinda and Bernal-Francez, expansions of old folk-poems, which met with the warmest praise from Southey and were translated by Adamson. He spent the next three years in and about Birmingham, Warwick and London, engaged in writing poetry and political pamphlets, and by these and by his periodicals he did much to unite the Portuguese émigrés and to keep up their spirit amid their sufferings in a foreign land. ”

“ Two summers ago, you may remember an attack I had and a twenty-four-hours wait while Gabriel went to Norcross for a doctor.”
Adamson remembered well. It had been a grisly experience; he and Tom had thought Blatch dying.
“I told you afterward, Mr. Blatch, that it would be wisdom to have a doctor at Hinterland. I’m glad you’ve decided to take one. But why Gaynes? There are numberless men of experience and ability who would have jumped at the chance.” ”

“ He is also supposed to have been the author of the dialogue ‘Zelator, Temporizar, Palemon,’ affixed to his uncle's ‘Answer to the Declaration of Certain Intentions set out in the King's Name.’ On being prohibited from preaching at Berwick he joined the exiled ministers in London. After the capture of the castle of Stirling by the exiled lords, he, in November 1585, returned to Scotland. During the absence of himself and his uncle in England, the New College had been converted by Bishop Adamson from a school of theology into one of arts and philosophy ”

“ ADAMSON, ROBERT (1852–1902) , Scottish philosopher, was born in Edinburgh on the 19th of January 1852. His father was a solicitor, and his mother was the daughter of Matthew Buist, factor to Lord Haddington. ”
