Then follows the text in five sections: the Preamble, the Notification, the Exposition, the Disposition and the Final Clauses. 5. ”

“ Some write the city, state, month, &c., at the close of a letter. This is not however, the usual form.
II. THE ADDRESS. Definition.—The address in the inside of a letter should be the same as the address on the envelope. It consists of the title and name of the person to whom the letter is written, and the place of his residence; as,—

REMARKS.
There are several reasons why the address should be written within the letter:—
1. Business men usually take an impression or make a copy of all letters written by themselves or their agents. ”

“ You must do what you can to prevent the students insisting on another address. They cannot know what they are asking. I can get through my ordinary business, but cannot attempt the impossible, such as a Rectorial address. ”

“ If your father, even, should call upon him it would create suspicion. So I am going to ask you to carry this letter to the address written on the envelope, and you must give it into his own hands to-night. Not even your own father will know that you have this letter; so if he should be questioned or watched he will be able to deny knowing of its existence. ”

“ Every letter received is first examined by an experienced and responsible officer, to make sure that it has been actually presented according to its address, and that the reasons assigned on the cover of the letter are sufficient to account for its non-delivery. ”

“ Speaker: A rule of this house directs that the Speaker shall examine and correct the journal before it is read. I therefore now rise, not to make a motion, nor to offer a resolution, but to ask the unanimous consent of the house to address to you a few words with a view to an addition which I wish to be made to the journal, of the adjournment of the house yesterday. ”

“ The warmth of the welcome extended should be expressed in the fullest manner, and as this is the central purpose of the whole address, it will bear one repetition. A good illustrative story, brief but pointed, may be worked in somewhere, perhaps in connection with a modest depreciation of our own fitness or ability adequately to express the strong feelings of those we represent, though if one can be found having a connection with the visitors themselves, it will be still better. What we wish our visitors to do while with us may also be appropriately referred to. ”

“ In an appreciative speech he reviewed the circumstances which had given rise to the present occasion, gave some explanation of the form and terms of the address, and took occasion to add that although the ladies were not mentioned in the address, the townspeople were not unmindful of the energetic way in which they had seconded the efforts of the masters. ”

“ ACCIDENTS. See STREET ETIQUETTE—MEN—ACCIDENTS.
ADDRESS. The address of a person may be stamped
on the stationery.
If the address is stamped, it is not customary
to stamp also the crest or monogram.
ADDRESSING ENVELOPES. MEN. A man should be addressed as Mr. James J, Wilson, or James J. Wilson, Esq. Either the Mr. or the Esq. may be used, but not the two together.
The title belonging to a man should be given. It is not customary to use Mr. or Esq. when Jr. or Sr. is used.
WOMEN. A woman's name should always have
the Miss or Mrs. ”

“ Upon lady friends in any city you are visiting; if gentlemen friends reside in the same city, you may either call upon them or send your card with your address and the length of time you intend staying, written upon it; if a stranger or friend visiting your city sends such a card, you must call at the earliest opportunity ”

“ To call, after an engagement has been announced, or a marriage has taken place, in the family.
For the older residents in the city or street to call upon the new-comers to their neighborhood.
After a removal from one part of the city to another, to send out cards with one's new address upon them.
To ascertain what are the prescribed hours for calling in the place where one is living, or making a visit, and to adhere to those hours.
For a gentleman to ask for the lady of the house as well as the young ladies, and to leave cards for her as well as for the head of the family. ”

“ Another helpful wrinkle, and one that makes for neatness, is an address label printed on gummed paper. Edwards' name and address appear at the top, following the word "From." Below are blank lines for name and address of the consignee. ”
