“ When the invoice covering any purchase is received, it is held till the commodities bought arrive. After inspection and acceptance of the goods, a voucher is made out in duplicate on which is written a copy of the invoice, with the cash discount, if any, shown deducted. Vouchers are given consecutive numbering just like checks. If immediate payment is to be made, the voucher will be “approved” and check drawn for the amount. The voucher with check attached is sent to the creditor with a request that he receipt the voucher and return it. ”

“ Handling the Purchase Invoice.—When goods are bought the purchase invoice should be verified or audited. The method of audit depends upon the organization of the business. In a small business, if the invoice is received before arrival of the goods, it is usually held till their arrival and then checked against them as to quantities, quality, and price. The extensions and total are verified and entry made in the purchase journal, using the audited invoice as a basis. ”

“ The ninth exception is an objection to the introduction of any evidence to show that the factors of the claimant had sold goods for him at more than one hundred and twenty per cent. above the invoice prices. We know that the prices of commodities fluctuate from many causes, and that enhanced prices can of themselves be no proof of unfair dealing, or of an entry having been made at the custom-house upon an undervalued invoice. ”

“ When all the invoices are finished, take the vouchers, and, starting with the top one, find where each invoice is entered in the purchase record and stamp the date in the PAID column opposite each entry. These places are easily found by reading the invoice numbers entered on the vouchers. ”

“ Ad valorem duties, in the United States, are levied according to the saleable value of the goods in the country of their origin, and it is usual to require at the port of entry the production of an invoice with full particulars as to the place where, time when, and person from whom the goods were purchased, and the actual cost of the goods and the charges on them. ”

“ The position taken on behalf of the defendants, that the transmission of the invoices passed the property in the wheat without the acceptance and payment of the drafts drawn against it, is utterly untenable. An invoice is not a bill of sale, nor is it evidence of a sale. ”

“ A retail sale is plainly a 'commercial dealing.' Section 2 (f) requires the invoice to be issued to a 'purchaser.' There again a customer of a retailer is a 'purchaser.' “ A merchant desiring to discount his accounts turns over to the credit company with whom he has made the arrangement, the invoices of all accounts to be discounted as evidence of the sales just made to customers. ”

‘‘accounting records’’ [2] include— (a)
invoices, receipts, orders for the payment of money, bills of exchange, cheques, promissory notes, vouchers and other documents of prime entry ”

“ Vouchers should never be made for invoices in dispute, as to prices or on account of claims for shortage, damaged goods or other cause. Until such claims are adjusted, the invoices should be kept in a file reserved for items in suspense. When the books are closed, such items must be included under liabilities in the balance sheet. To avoid actually entering them on the books, they may be entered in the balance sheet under some such caption as "Suspense Accounts."
10. Filing Audited Vouchers. The vouchers are now ready for filing until date of payment. ”

“ And such collector or officer shall give bond for the performance of his duties in such sum as the Secretary of the Treasury shall prescribe, and shall receive like compensation with that allowed to the present collectors of direct tax and internal duties. In all cases, previous to the making a deed, there shall be delivered to, and filed by, the collector, or other officer authorized to make the same, the receipt for the purchase money paid for the real property sold for any tax. ”

“ Thus, an order or promise to deliver a certain sum of money to A, or to be accountable or responsible to A, for a certain sum of money, or that A shall receive it from the maker, is a good promissory note; so a receipt for money to be returned when called for, or an acknowledgment, due to A a certain sum of money payable on demand; or a promise to pay or cause to be paid to A a certain sum of money; or an instrument acknowledging the receipt of money of A, promising to pay it on demand with interest ”

“ In an action, counter claim or set-off, founded upon an account, promissory note, bill of exchange, or other instrument, for the unconditional payment of money only, it shall be sufficient for the party to give a copy of the account or instrument, with all credits and indorsements thereon, and to state that there is due to him on such account or instrument, from the adverse party, a specified sum, which he claims with interest. ”

“ To every supervisor for examining the transcripts of land sold, twenty-five cents: for receiving payment of the tax, charges and costs for which any tract of land, or lot, may have been sold in whole, or in part, fifty cents; and for filing a certificate or receipt of the collector, deposited by the purchaser, or original proprietor, six cents. ”

“ However, I have been instructed by a person who need not be named, who has indeed stipulated that no name shall be mentioned, to advance you the sum of five hundred guineas, which I have here in my drawer, and which I will now proceed to count out to you if you, in the mean time, will sign this receipt, which acquits me of all responsibility and certifies that I have handed the money over to you without rebate or reduction. ”

“ Provided, That in settling said accounts said accounting officers shall also take into consideration the contract of said Clements, Bryan and Company, with the United States of the twenty-seventh June, eighteen hundred and thirty-eight, and deduct any profits which they may have made under said last-mentioned contract, from whatever amount may be found due to them under said contract of June twelfth, eighteen hundred and thirty-eight; and such balance so found to be due, shall be paid out of any moneys in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated. ”

“ The receipts or capital of the building and loan association consists of periodical payments by the members, interest and premiums paid by borrowing members or others, fixed periodical instalments by borrowing members, fines for failures to pay such fixed instalments, forfeitures, fees for transferring stock, entrance fees, and any other revenues or payments,—all of which go into the common treasury. ”

“ One part of it furnishes a Man of Business to dispatch his Affairs strangely; for if he be a Merchant, he shall write his Letters with one Hand, and Copy them with the other; if he is posting his Books, he shall post the Debtor side with one Hand, and the Creditor with the other; if he be a Lawyer, he draws his Drafts with one Hand, and Ingrosses them with the other. ”

The practical construction of both parties has been in conformity to the interpretation on which the defendants insist. ”

“ All advances made on the security of any bill of lading, specification, receipt, acknowledgment or certificate shall give and be held to give to the person, Bank or other body corporate making such advances, a claim for the re-payment of such advances on the grain, goods, wares or merchandize therein mentioned prior to and by preference over the claim of any unpaid vendor ”

“ It may require the payment into its treasury, each year, of a specific sum, or may apportion the amount exacted according to the value of the business permitted, as disclosed by its gains or receipts of the present or past years. ”

“ The terms pay, satisfy, settle, or secure, are equipollent words, when used to express the fulfilment by Long of his liability upon the judgment, and in a similar sense must be understood the terms receipt and statement, when used to describe a written acknowledgment of payment by a party making or signing such acknowledgment. ”

“ If a merchant has given to an agent corn, wool, oil, or any sort of goods, to traffic with, the agent shall write down the money value, and shall return that to the merchant. The agent shall then take a sealed receipt for the money that he has given to the merchant. ”
