“ A sore on the womb, lip or tongue, or lump on the breast that continues for a little time without getting better, is dangerous. It may soon spread in the surrounding tissue and general system. Operations on the womb and breast, performed in time, are very successful. Such tumors or sores should not be neglected. A lump in the breast should be examined early. The womb should be examined if there is a discharge from the vagina that continues. ”

“ Whatever the lump may be, it has no business there in the breast, any more than a bullet has. If it is only a small benign tumor, the process of taking it out is very simple, and there is nothing further to do. ”

“ Symptoms.—A fullness or a swelling is first noticed in the groin, which is made worse in standing, coughing and lifting. MOTHERS' REMEDIES.—Rupture, Poultice for.—"Take equal parts of lobelia and stramonium leaves; make a poultice and apply to the parts. Renew as often as necessary. This combination makes a very effective poultice and is sure to give relief." ”

Enlarged Glands—Tuberculosis
In almost every class are one or more children who are proud of small or big lumps under one or more jaws. Only physicians can find very small lumps. Many family doctors will say, "Oh, he will outgrow those," or "Those lumps will be absorbed." Like most other evils that we "outgrow" or that pass away, these lumps shriek not to be neglected. They mean interference with nourishment and prevent proper action of the lymphatic system, as adenoids prevent free breathing. ”

“ Their face and legs are full of small lumps or hard tumours, which in a little suppurate and throw out a black, thin, ichorous matter, and gradually encrease, especially in the face, till they turn confluent. ”

“ Trees which have lumps appearing like growths upon them are usually unhealthy. These lumps, or tumors, may be caused by defective nutrition, checks, or shakes, or by the depredations of animals or insects. ”

“ The lungs are always the principal, and I may also, from my own experience, add, the primary seat of the affection. Secondarily, from pressure, atrophy and destruction of the skin-glands, and atrophic degeneration of the fat and muscles result. ”

“ This is a collection of pus, which is forming among the tissues; I will treat the disease with the knife.... If thou findest, in the throat of a patient, a small tumor containing pus, and dost observe that it presents at one point a well-defined prominence like a wart, thou may’st conclude that pus is collecting at this point.... If thou findest, in a patient’s throat, a fatty growth which resembles an abscess, but which yields a peculiar sensation of softness under the pressure of the finger, say to thyself: this man has a fatty tumor in his throat ”

“ The lesions, having attained a certain size or development, may remain so for a time, but sooner or later retrogressive changes occur: the matured papules or tubercles, or infiltrated patches, slowly disappear by absorption, fatty degeneration, and exfoliation, leaving a yellowish or brownish pigmentation, usually with more or less atrophy or cicatricial-tissue formation—lupus exfoliativus; or disintegration and destruction result, terminating in ulceration—lupus exedens, lupus exulcerans. ”

“ Excretory Work of Glands.—The process of removing wastes from the body is called excretion. While in theory excretion may be regarded as a distinct physiological act, it is, in fact, leaving out the work of the lungs, but a phase of the work of glands. From the cells where they are formed, the waste materials pass into the lymph and from the lymph they find their way into the blood. They are removed from the blood by glands and then passed to the exterior of the body. ”

“ Fluid, known as lymph, is continually passing through the capillary walls into the tissues, and in health this is removed as fast as it is exuded, in one or more of three ways: part of it is used in the nutrition of the tissues, part is returned to the general circulation by the veins, and part by the lymphatics. Any accumulation constitutes dropsy and is a sign of disease, though not a disease in itself. ”

“ Ulcers on the legs. Yellow and fetid urine. Cracking sensation in the tibia. 5. Profuse flow of saliva. Small painless pimple which terminates in suppuration, with smarting. Spot at the instep, painful in the middle and insensible all round the circumference. Numbness of the left arm. Numbness of the limbs. 10. Sciatica. Swelling of the face as in the elephantiasis of the Greeks. Pain in a former cicatrix on the left side of the tongue. Cold hands. Heaviness of the head. ”

“ The glands form tumours of variable size, and are often larger than the primary growth, the characters of which they reproduce. The glands are at first movable, but soon become fixed both to each other and to their surroundings; when fixed to the mandible they form a swelling of bone-like hardness; in time they soften, liquefy, and burst through the skin, forming foul, fungating ulcers. A similar condition is met with in the groin from epithelioma of the penis, scrotum, or vulva. In cancer of the breast, the infection of the axillary glands is an important complication. ”

“ Boils or ulcers, which appear in the regions of the buttocks (Sphik) , or about the anus, and the organs of of generation, or on the back, forehead, cheek, or lips, or in the region of the external ears, or on the testes or the abdomen, or in the cavity of the mouth, or about the nape of the neck, or above the clavicles, can be easily healed. ”

“ In this disease the skin is dry from the increased absorption of the cutaneous lymphatics, the fat is absorbed from the increased absorption of the cellular lymphatics, the mucus of the lungs is too viscid to be easily spit up by the increased absorption of the thinner parts of it, the membrana sneideriana becomes dry, covered with hardened mucus, and at length becomes inflamed and full of aphthæ, and either these sloughs, or pulmonary ulcers, terminate the scene. ”

“ An ulcer in an emaciated patient, which is situated either on the head or in the throat, and which is narrow-mouthed and is traversed by a network of capillaries, and studded with fleshy or papillomatous eruptions, should be regarded as incurable. ”

“ Lancination in the whole jaw. Redness, and heat mounting to the face; cheeks and forehead are redder than the rest of the face. At half past 8, oppression, pain at the stomach, as from hunger.
Seventh day.—625. At 6, colic, diarrhœa and shuddering. At 8, merry, with desire to laugh, followed by shuddering in the head and legs. Cold feet. Lancination in the left lower gums, tightness of the nose, felt even in the jaw. Feelings excited, oppressed, as from some great misfortune. 630. Nervous pain below the bend of the right elbow, descending to the ring- and little fingers, at 10 in the morning. ”

“ Much of the dirt that gathers on the body comes, not from the outside, but from the inside of the body. The skin is full of little pores. These pores are the mouths of tiny pipes, or tubes, millions of which are found in the skin. ”

“ I believe when the wax is not consumed it clogs up the excretories with dead matter, thus the irritation of the nerves of throat, neck, lungs and lymphatics which give cause for the swelling of the tonsils and glands of the neck. ”

“ It is usually ushered in by rigors, followed by articular pains, lameness, and the formation of a specific deposit in the lymphatic system of some part of the body, with a tendency to destructive degeneration and ulceration. In the form known as glanders these deposits and ulcers take place mainly in the nasal mucosa, in the lungs, and in adjacent glands, while in that known as farcy the deposits occur in the cutaneous and subcutaneous lymphatic plexuses and the dependent glands. ”

“ After the eruptions or ulcers are healed a solution of corrosive sublimate of one grain to an ounce of water applied for some weeks behind the ear, and amongst the roots of the hair on one side of the head, where the mouths of the lymphatics of the neck open themselves, frequently removes these tumours. ”

“ It is ridiculous to talk of the injustice of cauterizing the thumb when the pain is in the hip, or scarifying the region of the stomach for a tumour inside the liver, or of oiling the ends of the horns of cattle, if there is softening of the hoofs. ”

“ If the crust is detached, a sharply defined ulcer is exposed, and when this heals it leaves a scar which is usually circular, thin, white, shining like satin, and the surrounding skin is darkly pigmented ”
