Yosef Karo,  Translation:Shulchan Aruch — Orach Chaim 695…

“ One who does more and one who does less [are both praiseworthy] , as long as they direct their heart toward heaven. One should not fast on Purim, except for a fast for a [bad] dream, and see 568 and 570. There are those who have the custom to dress in Shabbat/holiday clothes on Purim, and this is correct (Maharil) . We have the custom to make the Purim meal after the afternoon prayer and pray the evening prayer at night. We pray the afternoon prayer while most of the day remains, and most of the meal needs to be during the day (Minhagim) . ”

Portrait of James George Frazer James George Frazer,  The Golden Bough: A Study in Magic and Religion…

“ An argument for identifying Sacaea and Zakmuk is the apparent connexion of both with the Jewish festival of Purim. A fresh and powerful argument in favour of the identity [pg 360] of the two festivals is furnished by the connexion which has been traced between both of them and the Jewish feast of Purim.822 There are good grounds for believing that Purim was unknown to the Jews until after the exile, and that they learned to observe it during their captivity in the East. ”

Portrait of Leo Wiener Leo Wiener,  The History of Yiddish Literature in the Nineteenth Century

“ On the Purim, many masqueraders may be seen passing from house to house, followed by a curious crowd of children, anxious to catch a glimpse of the strange mummery of men and impossible animals. In some places the children and even grown persons manage to enter the house either by sheer force, or under the proverbial pretext that they are the "bear's brother." The actors begin in a chanting way: "Good evening, my good people, do you know what Purim means?" after which they proceed with the explanation and the performance of some grotesque scene. ”
