“ The sampler should be drawn much larger than it is here represented—say about 10 × 71⁄2 inches—and might be placed on the linen in the frame as sketched, leaving a good space below and at the side for practice. If the frame is 20 inches long, or larger still, it will hold this sampler and the next one. It is a good thing to have a nice set of samplers to keep, as one often finds it necessary to be reminded of suitable stitches, which will not always come to mind when wanted. ”

“ Four other rows complete the sampler, which only measures 181⁄2 × 63⁄4. In order to give it a larger size the lowest row is not reproduced. I have seen another drawn-work sampler which antedates that just described by a year. It is of somewhat coarse texture but is good in design, and bears in a panel at the side initials and the date. The Victoria and Albert Museum has also two somewhat similar drawn-work samplers—one by Elizabeth Wood, dated 1666, which contains the Stuart S’s; the other (undated) has the arms of James I.

“ Spanish samplers are generally large; they are sometimes square, sometimes long in shape. They are as a rule entirely covered with border patterns, which in the square shape are worked along the four sides parallel to the edge; and which in the long shape runs in lines across the sampler, with a break in the middle, where the border changes to another pattern, thus giving the impression that the sampler is joined up the centre. The patterns of the borders vary a great deal; I have counted thirty different ones on one sampler. ”

“ Darning-samplers are usually square, or nearly square, in shape, and are simply finished with a single line of hem-stitching at the edge, but some of the older ones are ornamented with a broader band of drawn-work as border; while a few have examples of drawn-work, alternating with squares and crosses of darning, in the body of the sampler. A small section of such a sampler, dated 1785, is illustrated on an enlarged scale in Fig. 77. It has a series of small conventional leaf patterns worked in single drawn-work, and edged with a scalloping worked in chain-stitch with green silk. ”

“ Mr Joseph Pennell’s Sampler, which finds a place here as a specimen of American work, has little to distinguish it from its fellows that were produced in England in the reign of George IV. The border, it is true, only preserves its uniformity on two of the four sides, but where it does it is designed on an old English pattern, that of the wild strawberry. So, too, we find the ubiquitous stag and coach dogs, Noahs, ash trees, birds, and flower baskets.
The sampler itself is a beautiful specimen of drawn work, and the lettering is the same colour as the linen. ”

“ Calibrate each personal sampling pump with a representative sampler in line. 2. Attach the sampler to the personal sampling pump with flexible tubing. 3. Sample at an accurately known flow rate between 1 and 3 L/min for a total sample size of 10 to 1000 L. NOTE: Limit the maximum loading of particulate matter on the filter to approximately 0.5 mg. ”

Why, he goes to a shop, and he asks for samples of all the different kinds of sugar, and so of tea and coffee, and he makes these last a great while, and then he goes to another, and does the same thing; and, when he thinks they know his tricks, he walks clear over to another town after samples; and so he lives upon almost nothing. ”

“ It should be remembered, however, that while the man who samples on a large scale can safely and properly reduce the size of his samples on this account, yet the principle is one which counts less and less as the stuff becomes more finely divided, and ought to be ignored in the working down of the smaller samples which come to the assayer. ”

“ It is important to notice that in all cases of practically testing paints the results are obtained by comparisons being made, and hence it is necessary in every case to have a standard with which to compare the sample to be tested. ”

“ Several pieces of information must be known in advance to plan a sampling strategy, including the size of the workforce to be sampled, the accuracy of the sampling and measurement method to be used and the confidence one wishes to have in predicting the exposure of the workforce.
For example, to determine with 90% confidence that at least one worker from a workplace subgroup will be in the top 10% of the exposures occurring in the group, the number of employees to sample would be chosen from Table 4. ”

“ The exact sampling time must be known in order to accurately estimate the sampled volume. Recording only the start and stop time assumes that the pump functions properly over the entire sampling period. Occasional spot checks for proper operation should be made throughout the sampling period.
Since many modern analytical techniques are extremely sensitive, special care must be taken to avoid contamination of field samples. [8] Samples must not be stored or shipped with bulk materials which might spill or otherwise present the possibility for contamination. ”

“ This formulation consists of limiting the questions to a small enough number to be handled in a short space of time and to a wide enough range to represent every possible degree of trade skill. The questions are tabulated and are then ready to be used in the final sampling process.
Final sampling is made by testing twenty men who are known to be typical representatives of each group (novice, apprentice, journeyman, expert) . Among the novices tested are some highly intelligent and mature men of good general knowledge but no trade ability. ”

“ When the word "significantly" is used in comparisons, it is meant to show that there is a significant statistical difference between two or more samples. Whenever eight or more specimens from one locality were available, the mean, range, standard deviation, standard error of the mean, and coefficient of variability were calculated. ”

“ Asking questions at the design stage can save headaches at the analysis stage: careful data collection can greatly simplify analysis and make it more rigorous. Or, as Sir Ronald Fisher put it: “To consult the statistician after an experiment is finished is often merely to ask him to conduct a post mortem examination. ”

“ Performance tests undergo much the same processes of sampling as do the oral and picture tests and they are calibrated in the same way. The principle followed here, as elsewhere, is that the value of a test 283lies not in its theoretical exactness but in its proved ability to pick out and classify correctly men of all degrees of skill within the trade. If the test does classify men in the groups in which they are known to belong, then it can be relied upon to classify correctly men about whom nothing is known in advance. ”

“ An accredited analytical laboratory should be used to conduct analysis of collected samples, and it is essential to consult with the analytical laboratory before sampling to ensure that the measurement methods available can meet the defined sampling needs. ”

“ The results of this final sampling are turned over to experts who make a careful study of the results and of the answers to each question. This enables them to determine the relative value of each individual question and the selection that makes a proper balance.
If a trade test is good, a known expert, when tested, is able to answer all, or nearly all, the questions correctly; a journeyman is able to answer the majority; an apprentice a smaller part, and a novice practically none. ”

“ These also aid in establishment of analyte purity. Potential sources of this information include chemical reference books, health hazard evaluation reports, bulk sample analyses, material safety data sheets, chemical process information, etc. Since innovation is a key element in the sampling and analytical method development process, detailed experiments for the initial development of the sampling approach and optimization of the analytical procedure are better left to the discretion of the researcher. ”

“ But the manager who is acquainted with the limitations of the statistical method and who intelligently understands the business forces with which he is dealing, finds it sufficiently accurate in the great majority of instances. The frequent and almost universal use of the sampling method of testing mailing lists, the use of figures as to the density of population in selling campaigns, and the increasing use of time studies in factories, show that statistics can be made to serve as a valuable guide in arriving at important decisions. ”

“ YOUR SAMPLES.—Every Local Representative should start with at least four sample corsets to show, and should wear a Spirella Corset of the proper size and model for herself when taking orders. As fast as possible enlarge your line until you have a sample of every corset we are making. While we do not advise your carrying more than seven samples at a time, it is often valuable to have a sample of each style in your home so that you can study it and have it on hand when the occasion re­quires. ”

“ If the number of experiments be very large, we may have precise information as to the value of the mean, but if our sample be small, we have two sources of uncertainty:— (1) owing to the “error of random sampling” the mean of our series of experiments deviates more or less widely from the mean of the population, and (2) the sample is not sufficiently large to determine what is the law of distribution of individuals. ”

“ Tinkering around with the data, also known as exploratory data analysis, is often the most informative part of the analysis. Exploratory plots can reveal data quality issues and outliers. Simple summaries, such as means, standard deviations, and quantiles, can help refine thinking and offer face validity checks for hypotheses. Many studies, especially when going in completely new scientific directions, are exploratory by design; the area may be too novel to include clear a priori hypotheses. Working with the data informally can help generate new hypotheses and ideas. ”

“ Let us consider three attributes, say A, B and C, of the individuals of a population and suppose that the attribute C is positively correlated to the attributes A and B, so that to great or small values of A or B correspond respectively great or small values of C. Now if the individuals in the population are statistically selected in such a way that we choose out individuals having great values of the attributes A and small values of the attribute B, then we get a statistical series regarding the attribute C, which consists of two seemingly distinct normal frequency distributions. ”

“ Provide Assessments of Variability Nearly all biological measurements, when repeated, exhibit substantial variation, and this creates uncertainty in the result of every calculation based on the data. A basic purpose of statistical analysis is to help assess uncertainty, often in the form of a standard error or confidence interval, and one of the great successes of statistical modeling and inference is that it can provide estimates of standard errors from the same data that produce estimates of the quantity of interest. ”

“ Any experiment may be regarded as forming an individual of a “population” of experiments which might be performed under the same conditions. A series of experiments is a sample drawn from this population.
Now any series of experiments is only of value in so far as it enables us to form a judgment as to the statistical constants of the population to which the experiments belong. ”
