“ The man who holds the drill raises it a little after each blow, and turns it [129] partly round, the degree of turn usually given being about one-eighth of a revolution. By this means, the hole is kept circular, and the cutting edge of the drill is prevented from falling twice in the same place. To keep the tool cool, and to convert the dust and chippings into sludge, the hole is kept partially filled with water, whenever it is inclined downwards. ”

“ The usual duty of a heavy drill per eight-hour shift using two men is from 20 to 40 feet of hole, depending upon the rock, facilities for setting up, etc., etc. [*] The lighter drills have a less average duty, averaging from 15 to 25 feet per shift. ”

“ It may be remarked that the eye of the workman is (for rough work, such as tapping or clearing holes) sufficient guide to enable the grinding of the drill true enough to partly avoid the conditions shown in these two figures (in which the errors are magnified for clearness of illustration) , because when the want of truth is less in amount than the thickness of the drill point, the centre of motion of the drill point when the drill has entered the work to its full diameter becomes neither at the point of the drill nor in the centre of its diameter, but intermediate between the two. ”

“ The Drill, Chapter III, should be read in class in advance of its study. It should be read as a drama, the teacher taking the part of the chairman, and the parts A, B, C, D, etc., being assigned to different members of the class. Each member acts his part according to the instructions, reading or repeating the words given his part in the drill. All difficult points should be explained by the instructor. After the pupils have studied the drill the teacher should provide an abstract of the drill. The following based on the First Drill will illustrate:
Abstract of First Drill. ”

“ No other sort of drill equals in fascination that which the embryo M.F.B. man must go through. Unlike a soldier or sailor, he must undertake many of the actual dangers of warfare during ordinary drill on the parade-ground. The instruction, conducted by superintendents who have gone through the mill themselves and know [Pg 245] every detail of the work, is divided into two parts—theoretical and practical.
The room in which most of the theory is taught is particularly interesting. It contains a half section of every apparatus or device used by or in connection with the brigade. ”

“ For the purpose of illustration, we will take the case of a hole bored vertically downwards, and will suppose the boring to be carried on by double-hand.
Boring the Shot-holes. —The surface of the rock having been prepared to receive the drill, one man sits down, and placing the shortest drill between his knees, holds it vertically, with both hands. The other man, who stands opposite, if possible, then strikes the drill upon the head with the sledge, lightly at first, but more heavily when the tool has fairly entered the rock. ”

Drill. Is a general name for the exercises through which soldiers and sailors are passed, to qualify them for their duties. There are many varieties of drill,—that of the cavalry, infantry, and artillery,—all have different drills conformable to their different organizations.
Drill-Sergeant. A non-commissioned officer, whose office it is to instruct soldiers as to their duties, and to train them to military evolutions.
Drogheda. A seaport town of Ireland, in the counties of Meath and Louth, built on both sides of the Boyne. ”

“ A large number of mechanical drills operated by hand power have been invented. Some imitate hand-drilling in the mode of delivering the blow; in others the drill-bit is caused to reciprocate by means of combinations of crank and spring. ”

“ In noticing the squad-drills, I perceive that the men learn less laboriously than whites that "double, double, toil and trouble," which is the elementary vexation of the drill-master,—that they more rarely mistake their left for their right,—and are more grave and sedate while under instruction. The extremes of jollity and sobriety, being greater with them, are less liable to be intermingled; these companies can be driven with a looser rein than my former one, for they restrain themselves; but the moment they are dismissed from drill, every tongue is relaxed and every ivory tooth visible. ”

“ One of the most useful acquisitions to the equipment of the modern miner is a portable mechanical drill, which makes it possible for him to dispense with the time-honored pick, hammer, and hand-drill. ”

“ The boom of the drilling rig as it raises and drops the drill provides the necessary impact. With the core method, as its name implies, a hollow boring drill cuts its way aided by steel shot and a flow of water forced through the pipe that rotates the cutting tool.
With either method the results are the same. Sooner or later the drill will reach an underground water course of sufficient size to give an ample flow. As such drilling is done on a charge of three to five dollars a foot, the owner, of course, hopes for sooner. ”

“ An old fire drill works best because the wood becomes charred and it is easier to keep a charred drill dry. In working any drill, care must be taken to keep up a steady and rapid motion with a downward pressure. The wood meal which is ground from the hearth by the drill must be allowed to collect in a little heap near which dry tinder is placed. It must be protected from strong drafts, but it may be fanned gently with the hand. As the spindle becomes warm from twirling, the wood meal becomes warm, then it begins to smoke, and at last it is fanned into a flame. ”

“ Field-gun drill. Exercise of heavy guns on ground and traversing platforms, mortar drill, rocket drill, Armstrong gun drill, practice with hot shot and molten iron shells, gun and transporting carriage drill. ”

Examine the sticks that you selected some time ago for a fire drill.
If you choose a hard piece for a spindle, your drill will work better if you choose soft wood for the hearth.
Round the ends of the spindle and make a shallow hole with a groove beside it in the hearth.
Make a shallow hole in a flat piece of wood to hold the upper end of the spindle.
After you learn to work the drill with your hands, try a strap. ”

“ He operated on a piece of hard diorite an inch and three-eighths in thickness, and employed as a drilling agent a wooden wand of ash, or at times, of pine, in conjunction with sharp quartz sand. Attached to the wand was a heavy disc, to act as a fly-wheel, and an alternating rotatory motion was obtained by means of a bow and cord attached at its centre to the apex of the drilling-stock, and giving motion to it after the manner of a "pump-drill," such as is used by the Dacotahs [100] and Iroquois [101] for producing fire by friction, or what is sometimes called the Chinese drill. ”

“ Drill is, formally, the preparation of soldiers for their duties in war by the practice or rehearsal of movements in military order and the handling of arms, and, psychologically, the method of producing in the individual soldier habits of self-control and of mechanically precise actions under disturbing conditions, and of rendering the common instinctive will of a body of men, large or small, amenable to the control of, and susceptible to a stimulus imparted by its commander’s will. ”

“ By remembering the immense and concentrated weight of the upright drill and stem, the tremendous force of even a short fall may be conceived. The drill will bore many feet in a single day through solid rock, and a few hours sometimes suffices to force it fifty feet through dirt or gravel. When the debris accumulates too thickly around the drill, the latter is drawn up rapidly. ”

“ The modern drill has also gone through a great many developments in order to speed up the work that it performs. When a casting is to have forty or fifty holes drilled and tapped in it, instead of following the old method of drilling each hole separately, a lot of separate drilling spindles are used, each fitted with a drill, and these are brought simultaneously into play. ”

“ The element on which a movement is regulated. In company drill it is usually the right or left; leading, rear, or center squad.
Deploy. To extend the front. The company deploys when it executes as skirmishers.
There are really only two conditions that we must consider in this drill. The movements are very easy to
understand, but they require a lot of practice to prevent confusion. ”
