Centre de recherches Ernest Babelon, Brazilian gold, money and economic growth in France in the 18th century (1999)
“ Gold was discovered in Brazil for the first time in 1577 but began to be exploited only in the late 17th century. The subsequent gold rush led to the creation of new cities (Ouro Preto in 1711) , refining and minting centres (Villa do Carma and Villa de Sabara, 1711, Villa Nova da Rainha, 1714) . Table 7 gives the estimates of world gold output for the period according to Soetbeer ; in the 18th century, Brazil's output amounts to 8.4 t. per annum (8.85 t. in 1720-1740 and 14.6 in 1740-1760) . This figure agrees with the estimates of gold arrivals in Lisbon (7.5 t./year according to Morineau) . ”
