But in many cases the object of explanation, like the object of relief, is to help the handicapped person to make a good life with his handicap.
Many a patient can manage his own adjustment to change and go on getting and giving satisfaction in social life if he can know what resources are available to him, and how to approach them, and if he can understand the nature of his weakness and his strength and the possibilities of help from experts. The curable person will use this knowledge to avoid a permanent physical limitation, the incurable will use it to guard against a social disability.

Possibly a handicap, such as defective vision or mental inability to keep up with his class, may impel a child to absent himself from school. The case worker who understands emotional conflict or instability and is able to deal with the problem can provide whatever treatment the child may need while she interprets his difficulties to the school and to the child's family. The child may need medical care, psychological treatment, or psychiatric service, to bring about a change of attitude.
